With over 75 years of innovation and expertise, JEOL continues to empower scientific discovery and advanced industrial applications worldwide.  JEOL UK, headquartered 20 miles north of London, is expanding their Applications Department, and we are looking for a skilled Application Specialist with expertise in Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) applied to physical sciences and materials research. In this role, you will support researchers, industry professionals and technical teams in utilising scanning and transmission electron microscopy for applications in materials science, nanotechnology, and industrial research. You will play a key role in providing advanced technical training, assisting with instrument optimisation for high-quality data collection, and participating in developing and improving solutions for materials sciences electron microscopy to ensure customers fully leverage our cutting-edge electron microscopy technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise and application support for customers utilising SEM and TEM in materials science and physical sciences research.
    • Conduct on-site and remote training in basic and advanced electron microscopy imaging techniques, materials characterization workflows and analytical techniques.
    • Assist in troubleshooting and optimisation of data acquisition and processing pipelines on standard and unconventional sample types.
  • Support sales teams in pre-sales engagements, by conducting technical demonstrations, performing sample analyses and hosting training workshops and webinars. Collaborate with customers and internal R&D teams to improve imaging applications and develop new techniques in material science electron microscopy.
  • Keep up with emerging technologies, research methodologies, and best practices in material science electron microscopy, and assist in creation of training and marketing material as well as application notes.

Key Skills & Experience

  • In-depth knowledge of SEM and (S)TEM, particularly in advanced materials science applications.
  • Experience in metallurgy, polymers, ceramics, nanomaterials, and failure analysis using electron microscopy.
  • Strong understanding of EBSD, EDS, EELS and other analytical techniques utilised in SEM and (S)TEM. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform data acquisition and data processing with these techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills for engaging with researchers, engineers, and industry professionals.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex issues pertaining to microscope operation, optimisation and data collection, and to guide users effectively.
  • An understanding of, and an ability to write, programs/scripts in computer languages widely used in SEM and (S)TEM in physical sciences and materials research. Ability to write scripts in Python is essential.
  • A background in materials science, physics, nanotechnology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Prior experience in application support, technical sales, or research roles involving SEM/TEM is highly desirable.
  • Full UK driving Licence
  • Willingness to travel – the position is office/customer-site based

  • Experience with volume and/or cryo applications methods and software is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with scientists, researchers, and technical teams.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex issues pertaining to microscope operation, optimisation and data collection, and to guide users effectively.
  • A background in biology, bioengineering, material science, or a related field is preferred.
  • Prior experience in an application support, technical sales, or research role using electron microscopy is highly desirable.

In this role, you will support researchers and industry professionals in utilising CryoEM for life sciences, structural biology and cryo electron tomography applications. You will play a key role in providing advanced technical training, assisting with instrument optimisation for high-quality data collection, and participating in developing and improving solutions for cryo and structural biology electron microscopy to ensure customers fully leverage our cutting-edge cryo electron microscopy technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert application support for CryoEM workflows, focusing on SPA and cryo-electron tomography.
    • Train users in sample preparation techniques, optimising grid preparation, sample vitrification, and data collection strategies.
    • Assist in troubleshooting and optimisation of data acquisition and processing pipelines on standard and unconventional sample types.
    • Assist in image processing, data reconstruction workflows, and best practices for high-resolution structural analysis.
  • Support sales teams in pre-sales engagements, by conducting technical demonstrations, performing sample analyses and hosting training workshops and webinars.
  • Collaborate with customers and internal R&D teams to improve workflows and optimise instrument performance and develop new techniques in CryoEM imaging.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Strong expertise in CryoEM techniques, particularly SPA, tomography and MicroED workflows.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and optimize CryoEM data collection workflows, including with SerialEM.
  • An understanding of, and an ability to write, programs/scripts in computer languages widely used in life sciences electron microscopy.
  • Experience in sample vitrification, grid handling, and optimising microscope imaging conditions.
  • Knowledge of image processing software packages
  • Familiarity with macromolecular structure determination and high-resolution imaging. This includes a sound knowledge of the electron microscopy principles that govern structure determination.
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with researchers, industry professionals, and technical teams.
  • A background in structural biology, biophysics, biochemistry, or related branches of materials science is preferred.
  • Prior experience in an application support, research, or technical role involving CryoEM is highly desirable.
  • Full UK driving Licence

NMR Applications Specialist

JEOL (UK) Ltd is looking for a new NMR applications specialist based in our UK demonstration laboratory in Welwyn Garden City.

Role overview:

The NMR Applications Scientist provides applications support to the Sales and Marketing team through demonstrations of NMR products to existing and potential customers. Other responsibilities include delivering applications notes and similar marketing collateral, providing technical advice to colleagues, and developing and delivering NMR training courses.

The NMR applications specialist will:

  • Demonstrate the full capabilities of NMR products to existing and potential customers in the applications lab, at customer sites, and scientific conferences
  • Provide clear reports from sample data acquired at demos or from customer samples to promote our NMR products.
  • Contribute to the upkeep of the NMR applications lab
  • Write applications notes and other marketing collateral
  • Represent JEOL at domestic and international scientific conferences and exhibitions.
  • Provide technical support to customers, sales, and marketing, pre and post sales
  • Assist Product Managers with the evaluation of new products, software, or accessories
  • Participate in development and delivery of training for NMR customers
  • Collaborate with R&D and Marketing to promote JEOL NMR systems
  • Develop expertise with developing NMR applications and methods

The qualifications required are:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Physics or related discipline
  • Fluent English (other European languages and Japanese are a plus
  • Extensive knowledge of NMR applications and methods
  • Full Driving License
  • Up to 50% travel is anticipated
  • Full current eligibility to work and live in the UK and no visa restrictions to travel internationally
