The ECZ Luminous (JNM-ECZL series) is an FT NMR spectrometer equipped with state-of-the-art digital and high frequency technology. The highly integrated Smart Transceiver System, a high-speed, high-precision digital high-frequency control circuit, enables further miniaturization and high reliability of the spectrometer. It is capable of high-field and solid-state NMR measurements while maintaining the size of a conventional low-field solution NMR system.
The new Multi Frequency Drive System enables multi-resonance measurements in a standard configuration, providing a wider range of solutions.

Congratulations to our esteemed colleague Dr. Hideyuki Takahashi at JEOL Ltd. for winning the 2021 'Presidential Science Award' from the Microanalysis Society (MAS) for his long-term contribution to the field of microbeam analysis. He has been engaged in R&D and application development of electron probe microanalyzer and soft X-ray emission spectrometer since he joined JEOL.
We would like to thank Takahashi-san for all his hard work and dedication.
Data from a JEOL 300kV TEM, JEM-ARM300F, and a new laser system by IDES, Inc. will be presented by the research team of AIST and Osaka University at M&M 2021.
The research group of Dr. Ryousuke Senga, Electron Microscopy Group, Nanomaterials Research Institute, Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and Professor Kazutomo Suenaga, Department of Nanocharacterization for Nanostructures and Functions, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Center, The Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research (ISIR: SANKEN), Osaka University, succeeded in recording atomic-resolution in-situ movies of growing carbon nanotubes and onion-shaped carbon nano structures in a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The structures were formed by laser irradiation of samples made of carbon films and iron nanoparticles.
This experiment was conducted using a JEOL 300kV Transmission Electron Microscope with a cold field emission gun, JEM-ARM300F, and a new system designed by JEOL subsidiary Integrated Dynamic Electron Solutions, Inc. for precisely focusing lasers onto TEM samples, Luminary Micro. This combination of high-performance imaging instrumentation and reduced sample motion due to precision-controlled rapid localized illumination enables extraordinary spatial resolution for in-situ experiments.
The details of this research will be presented by Dr. Senga during the Microscopy and Microanalysis (M&M) 2021 Conference, held in the U. S. from 1st - 5th August 2021.

The Alpha takes you to a new world of mass spectrometry.
JEOL Ltd. (President & COO Izumi Oi) announces the release of JMS-T2000GC "AccuTOF™ GC-Alpha", the latest model of the successful AccuTOF™ GC series gas chromatograph – time-of-flight mass spectrometers, to be released in February 2021. This product is a GC-MS that represents a significant improvement in performance and functionality using two newly developed Key Technologies. The basic hardware performance has been greatly improved and a new generation of automated data analysis software is included in the standard configuration.
JEOL Ltd. announces the release of a new cold field emission cryo-electron microscope (cryo-EM), the CRYO ARM™ 300 II (JEM-3300), to be released in January 2021. This new cryo-EM has been developed based on the concept of "Quick and easy to operate and get high-contrast and high-resolution images".
CRYO ARM™ 300 II is a cryo-electron microscope that specializes in the observation of electron beam-sensitive specimens, such as protein, for single particle analysis, tomography, and MicroED. This system offers improved stability, throughput and ease of use compared to the previous generation of cryo-EMs. Moreover, this is an all-in-one system that can handle everything from screening to data acquisition, allowing for more flexibility in operation at the customer sites to meet the needs of the facility. These improvements allow users to obtain high-quality images by simple operations even for those who have never used an electron microscope before.

JEOL and Advanced Chemistry Development, Inc. (ACD/Labs) announced they have concluded a distribution agreement for ACD/NMR software.
NMR Predictor Suite software has a structure predictive function that can predict an NMR spectrum from chemical structure information, among ACD/NMR software. It is a tool that can perform structural analysis easily. For a user who is considering the purchase of an NMR for the first time, it will be a valuable source of structural analysis information.
We are pleased to share that the paper by Prof. Ido Kaminer and team at Technion – Israel Institute of Technology has been published in Nature.
Prof. Ido Kaminer uses our Transmission Electron Microscope "JEM-2100Plus" and the equipment made by INTEGRATED DYNAMIC ELECTRON SOLUTIONS, INC. (California, USA), which became our wholly-owned subsidiary in January 2020.
We would like to inform you that JEOL UK is still operating as normal under the exceptional circumstances posed by the current COVID-19 crisis. Our Sales and Service departments are open and we have plans in place to continue this as events develop.

Many common problems can be resolved over the telephone; however, we are looking at supporting live video calls with JEOL Engineers to offer an increased level of service. There is no change to our policy should you require a visit from a Service Engineer, however, we will be asking you to kindly complete a short questionnaire prior to any on-site visit for the safety of our staff.
We appreciate that some customers may be working in multi-user environments or deciding to shut down instruments for possibly an unknown period. If you need advice on these matters, please contact us if you haven’t already done so.
Understandably, over the next few weeks, we will be prioritising breakdown visits to certain customers (hospitals and those undertaking biological research). Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding if this results in any delay in our service to you.

After the latest announcement from the UK government regarding measures against the COVID-19 virus, we are aware that many institutions and facilities may be closed for an unknown period.
Unlike other equipment, NMR systems, specifically Super Conducting Magnets, cannot be simply switched off. Cryogen levels (liquid helium and liquid nitrogen) within the magnet need to be maintained to keep the magnet functioning.
JEOL always recommends a weekly nitrogen fill helium fill well before the minimum refill level is reached. We do however appreciate that this may be or could become difficult in the near future.
Regarding nitrogen, most magnets can in fact go two weeks between fills. Minimum safe helium levels vary between magnets. We can advise on this if required.
Should the nitrogen not be maintained, eventually the helium consumption would rise significantly. Once the helium level drops below a critical point, by either lack of nitrogen or a delayed helium fill, the magnet will cease to be super-conducting and dump its energy (a quench). Most of what cryogens remain can be quickly released as gas when this happens.
Although magnets are designed to cope with an unexpected quench, there is always the risk of mechanical damage should this happen. But in most cases, the magnet could be reinstalled. This would however be at considerable cost and with lengthy downtime in the interim.
We would therefore ask that every effort is made and priority is given to maintain the cryogen levels of the magnet.
If at some stage it becomes clear that this cannot be done, we would recommend that the magnet is de-energized in a controlled manner to prevent a quench. Please contact us ASAP in this case. We would need to advise on the minimum helium level to do this safely, which depends on the magnet type.

We are very honoured to be at the launch of the Rosalind Franklin Institute today.
Following the announcement in February 2018 of an initial £1.55m investment to fund the development of a unique time-resolved high-resolution transmission electron microscope, the purchase of the JEOL FIB with assistance from the MRC, Diamond Light Source and the RCaH, is the first stage in what will be a long term project.
The newly developed JIB-4700F utilises a Focussed Ion Beam column with a high-current density Ga ion source providing up to 90nA of probe-current. The high current provides for the fast ion milling and processing of specimens. The SEM optics feature an "in-lens Schottky-emission electron gun" that produces an electron beam with a maximum probe-current of 300nA, which allows for simultaneous high-resolution observations and fast analyses. This field emission SEM additionally features a hybrid conical objective lens, GENTLEBEAM™ (GB) mode and an in-lens detector system to deliver a guaranteed resolution of 1.6nm at a low accelerating voltage of 1 kV.
In parallel with high-speed cross-section processing by FIB, high-resolution SEM observations and fast analyses can be conducted utilizing energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Additionally, a three-dimensional analysis function that automatically captures SEM images at regular intervals during cross-section processing is provided as one of the JIB-4700F's standard features.
JEOL UK is proud to announce that the Scottish Cryo-EM consortium has chosen the JEOL JEM-Z300FSC CRYO ARM™ 300 as their preferred automated Cryo Transmission Electron Microscope (Cryo-TEM) for the Scottish Centre for Macromolecular Imaging (SCMI).
The SCMI consortium led by the MRC Centre for Virus Research (CVR) at The University of Glasgow, selected JEOL after a thorough evaluation of the competing technologies for cryo-TEM. The JEOL CRYO ARM™ 300 will be supported by a second TEM, the JEOL 200kV JEM-F200 “F2” Cryo-TEM.
Project lead and programme leader in the CVR, Dr David Bhella said:
“The mission of the CVR is to carry out fundamental research on viruses and viral diseases, translating the knowledge gained for the improvement of health and benefit of society.
Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy is revolutionising the field of structural biology. The SCMI represents a tremendous opportunity not only for the CVR, but also for Life Scientists throughout Scotland. The new facility will place Glasgow at the centre of vital structural biology research by offering world-class capability. The new technology will help us investigate key processes in cancer biology and infection”.
Cryo-EM has gained enormous momentum in recent years resulting in the award for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Ultra-high resolution structural analysis of viruses and proteins derived from cryo-EM techniques such as Single Particle Analysis (SPA) require high stability hardware and software.
The JEOL CRYO ARM™ 300 is the latest offering in cryo-TEM, able to achieve unprecedented resolution and stability by including Cold Field Emission Gun; in-column Omega energy filter; Hole-Free Phase Plate; side-entry liquid nitrogen cooling stage and an automated 12 specimen storage and exchange system.
The JEM-F200 "F2” is a high throughput TEM and the only 200kV system in its class to offer a Cold Field Emission Gun. The 'F2' employs the latest JEOL innovations in an easy-to-use, extremely stable, high resolution imaging 200kV TEM with STEM. This makes it the ideal partner for any high-level cryo-TEM.

Pioneering centre for nanoscale materials research launched on Harwell Campus
Industry, press and leading scientists have gathered for the opening of a pioneering new centre for the study of nanoscale materials located at Diamond Light Source. The launch of this unique centre is set to boost the UK’s world-leading science and technology infrastructure.
Oxfordshire’s cutting-edge electron Physical Sciences Imaging Centre (ePSIC) is the result of the collaboration between a research facility, academia and industry. Diamond Light Source, the UK’s synchrotron, partnered with the University of Oxford and the global speciality chemicals company, Johnson Matthey to bring a unique set of tools to the centre. Funding for the construction of the new Diamond building housing ePSIC included contributions from the Wellcome Trust, the Biotechnology
Biological Sciences Research Council and a £2M contribution from the Science and Technology Facilities Council.
The internationally leading centre for UK science contains two state-of-the-art electron microscopes for the physical sciences, designed to provide scientists with atomic-level images in a range of technologically important materials.
Today Johnson Matthey, Oxford University and Diamond Light Source announce the creation of a state-of-the-art materials characterisation facility at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus. This world-class site is close to both Oxford University and Johnson Matthey’s Sonning Common Research laboratories and is home to Diamond, the UK’s synchrotron science facility, where currently 24 experimental stations (beamlines) are operational with funding in place to increase this number to 33 by 2018.

The National Management Committee of the UK 850 MHz Solid-State NMR facility, based at the University of Warwick, today announced the award of the contract to supply a 1 mm CPMAS solid-state NMR probe for their 850 MHz widebore system to JEOL (UK) Limited. This will be the first 1 mm solid-state probe to be supplied in Europe.
The EPRSC, BBSRC & Birmingham Science City (AWM & ERDF) funded UK 850 MHz Solid-State NMR facility has been in operation since February 1st 2010 delivering advances in Materials Science, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Sciences and Physics, with time allocated to date to scientists from 16 UK universities.
Mr Peter Meadows, European Product Manager for NMR at JEOL said "The addition of the 1 mm CPMAS probe to the JEOL portfolio of products supports and strengthens our position in Solid-State NMR. JEOL’s 1 mm CPMAS probe is the first commercially available probe to deliver magic angle spinning (MAS) speeds from 1 kHz to 80 kHz stable to < 10 Hz; it features strong rf fields, and provides high sensitivity per unit volume."

JEOL has brought the relatively recent multi-touch interactive computing technology to a research-grade scientific instrument. The InTouchScope software interface has the familiar look and feel of today's personal electronic media. This is an SEM with an easy-to-learn, intuitive software interface with all the capabilities of a full-grade, variable pressure SEM.
The InTouchScope will be demonstrated at EMAG 2011 on 6-9 September at the University of Birmingham.

SF6 (sulphur hexafluoride) is used extensively in TEMs as a high voltage insulator because of its high resistance to electrical breakdown. Unfortunately, it is both a potent greenhouse gas and highly inert, remaining in the atmosphere for many years.
EU legislation in July, 2006 imposed strict control on the handling of SF6, making it illegal to release SF6 into the atmosphere. As part of JEOL’s ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Accreditation, JEOL’s manufacturing facilities invested in the necessary equipment well before the regulations came into effect.
JEOL has now invested within the UK in the necessary equipment and Service Engineer training to enable JEOL to undertake SF6 recovery and recycling in-house, further extending JEOL’s commitment to customer support. We believe this investment makes JEOL the only electron microscope supplier in the UK with this in-house capability.
